Our Story
A Community Built on Belonging
Beacon Mentorship was founded on a simple belief: every person with special needs deserves a community that sees their potential, celebrates their victories, and shows up for them — every single time.
Our Mission
To empower special needs youth and adults in Toronto through inclusive community sports, one-on-one mentorship, and trusted respite care — so every individual can play, grow, and belong.
Inclusion First
Every program we run is designed from the ground up to include participants of all abilities — not as an accommodation, but as the entire point.
Family Partnership
We work alongside families, not just for them. Caregivers are partners in everything we do, from program design to feedback and advocacy.
Safe & Trusted
Every volunteer and mentor is background-checked and trained. Families trust us with their most precious people — we take that seriously.
Joy as a Goal
We measure success not just in skills learned, but in smiles earned. Joy, friendship, and confidence are outcomes we pursue deliberately.
What We Do
Three pillars, one purpose — giving special needs individuals and their families the support they deserve.
Respite Care
We provide structured, enriching daytime and evening care so families can rest, recharge, and attend to their own needs — knowing their loved one is safe, engaged, and having fun. Our respite programs run weekdays and Friday evenings, with emergency care available on short notice.
- Daytime programming Mon–Fri, 9 AM–4 PM
- Friday Evening Social Nights, 5:30–8:30 PM
- Emergency respite with 24-hr notice
- Trained, background-checked staff at every session
One-on-One Mentorship
Our mentorship program pairs each participant with a dedicated, trained volunteer mentor who meets with them weekly. Together they explore the city, build life skills, and — most importantly — build a genuine friendship. Mentors are matched carefully based on personality, interests, and goals.
- Carefully matched mentor-participant pairs
- Weekly outings and skill-building activities
- All mentors background-checked and trained
- Flexible scheduling to fit family needs
Community Sports Events
From wheelchair basketball to adaptive swimming and monthly track & field days, our sports events give participants a team, a crowd, and a reason to cheer. Every event is staffed by trained volunteers who understand the unique needs of each athlete — and every participant goes home with a medal.
- Wheelchair basketball every Saturday
- Adaptive swimming Tuesdays & Thursdays
- Monthly track & field days across Toronto
- Bocce & lawn games every Wednesday
How It Started
Beacon Mentorship was founded in 2014 by a small group of Toronto parents and disability advocates who saw a gap: their children had needs that existing programs couldn't fully meet. They wanted something more personal, more joyful, and more community-rooted.
What began as a Saturday basketball session in a North York gym has grown into a full-service organization serving over 1,200 participants annually — with programs spanning sports, mentorship, and respite care across the city.
Today, Beacon is powered by more than 300 volunteers, a dedicated staff team, and the unwavering support of families, donors, and community partners who believe that every person deserves a place to belong.
